Obituary of Mrs. Hoag.

Mary Etta Powers was born at Burr Oak,Mitchell county, Iowa, May 10th, 1870. She was one of a family of nine children of Cornelius and Ann Powers.

On the 17th day of May, 1893, she was united in marriage with Wm. C. Hoag, of this city, who, with a baby two years old, is left to mourn the loss of wife and mother. Both of her sisters and father have gone to the other shore while three brothers remain, their home being in Oregon.

The health of Mrs. Hoag was poor some time, and she road out for the last time in October. Since that time there was no marked change in her condition until Monday, March 22, when she was taken with a hemorrhage of the lungs and sank very rapidly till the time of her death at 9 o'clock Wednesday evening, March 24.

Mrs. Hoag graduated from the Osage high school in 1891 and afterward taught several terms in the county schools. She was twice chosen by the city council to take charge of the public library. On the 31st of December, 1893 she was received into the M. E. church, where she was an active member of the League and Women's Foreign Missionary society.

Of a cheerful disposition, she was a kind friend, a good companion, and when sickness came,a patient sufferer. The song that she sang most was "We have an Anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll", and it gave her comfort and courage to the end. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Her pastor, Rev. B. D. Smith, preached the sermon to a large audience of relatives and friends.
