Dr. Eduards Jakobsons, 97, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, and formerly of Carrington, North Dakota, died Monday, August 20, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, N.D. Burial will be in Carrington Cemetery.

Eduards Jakobsons was born in 1910, in Latvia, the son of Augusts and Lina Jakobsons. On December 7, 1940, he was united in marriage to Janina Zukovskis in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from the Latvian State Technical High School in Riga in 1929, studied chemistry at the University of Latvia in Riga from 1929 - 1932, and continued with his veterinary studies, graduating in 1939 with the DVM degree. He served for one year in the Latvian First Cavalry as non-commissioned Second Lieutenant Veterinarian. He then worked for four years as a District Veterinarian at Vainode, Latvia. 1944 to 1946 was spent in the Sudetenland of Germany and Czechoslovakia working on the eradication of hoof and mouth disease in cattle.

From 1947 to 1949, he worked at the Tuberculosis Hospital in Amberg, Germany as a bacteriologist. Dr. Jakobsons, his wife, and son, Ivar, emigrated to the US in November 1949, following the Communist takeover of Latvia and Eastern Europe. He worked for a time at Norden Laboratories in Lincoln, Nebraska, and on October 1, 1950 they moved to Carrington. He spent three years working mostly for the ND Livestock Sanitary Board in Bangs eradication before opening his own private practice in Carrington. He had also been the Carrington Sales Ring Veterinarian from 1965 until 1989. Dr. Jakobsons was a member of the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association and had served on their board, and was a standing member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He also retained active membership in the Latvian Fraternity, Konkordia Zelmenis.
He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington since 1950. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one son, Ivar (Nanette) of Osage, Iowa; one daughter, Rita (Tim) Sipe of Fargo, North Dakota; one granddaughter Anne-Marie of Cresco, Iowa; one grandson, Ned (Devin) of LeMars, Iowa; and one great-granddaughter, Felicity Jakobson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janina; by his parents; by three sisters; and by one brother.
