STACYVILLE, IOWA - Mass of Christian Burial for Gene J. Mayer, age 83, of Stacyville, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery with Military Rites by the Stacyville American Legion Post 569. Visitation will be from 4-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Visitation Catholic Church, where there will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before services at the church.

Gene died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit.

Gene was born January 1, 1924, in Stacyville, the first born son of Ernest and Matilda (Loecher) Mayer. Gene attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville. He served in the Army during World War II. His tour of duty was in Japan. He married Marjorie Thome on November 27, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa.

Gene was a farmer all his life on various farms in the Meyer-Stacyville area. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion Post 569 in Stacyville. His interests included playing cards with the group from the Legion and with his family. His greatest interest was spending time with his family and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Wayne and Kevin Mayer; and two brothers-in-law, Gene Brown and Larry Hayungs.

Gene is survived by his wife Marjorie Mayer of Stacyville; two sons: Terry (Linda) Mayer and Dean (Diane) Mayer of St. Ansgar; four daughters: Sandra Mayer of Rochester, Minn. , Wanda (Dan) Warrington of St. Ansgar, Diane (Matt) Duvall of Denver, Colo., and Gwen (Josh) Isler of Frederick, Colo.; two daughters-in-law: Bon Mayer of St. Ansgar and Grace Mayer of Mantorville, Minn.; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Vernon (Imelda) Mayer and Glenn (Janet) Mayer of Stacyville; a sister: Arlene Brown of Osage; three brothers-in-law: Ralph (Mildred) Thome of Osage, Ben (Mary) Thome of Adams, Minn., Joe (Arlene) Thome of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-law: Mary (Tony) Young of Garner, Lorena (Ray) Panhoff of Ventura, and Emilie (Wayne) Gerlock of Carterville, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
