AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- A memorial service for Melanie A. Haverhals Selken will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Robert Iverson officiating. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

Melanie (Deakins) Haverhals Selken, 54, of Austin, formerly of the northwest Iowa area, died Thursday (July 19, 2007), following an accident at Grain Miller's Inc. in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

She was born April 10, 1953, in Plainwell, Mich., to Raymond Greene and Joann Storkan. She spent her childhood in Anaheim, Calif., where she graduated from Western High School in 1971. On Jan. 22, 1972, she married Ross Haverhals Sr. in Garden Grove, Calif. They had three children. The couple later divorced, and she made her home in northwest Iowa, where she worked at K-Products and Pella Co.

She married Randy Selken on May 1, 1999, and they divorced six years later. She recently made her home in Austin, where she attended Grace Lutheran Church. She was engaged to Dean Sayles of Austin.

She is survived by her children, Juliet (Ross) Martin of Dubuque, Iowa, Ross (Leah) Haverhals of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Paul (Erin) Haverhals of Camp Zama, Japan; two grandchildren; her mother, Joann Deakins of Bakersfield, Calif.; a brother, Chuck Deakins of Norco, Calif.; and a sister, Kathy DeVos of Bakersfield. She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Deakins.
