HELFTER KLECKNER GILLES

Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice Pauline Helfter, age 102, of New Haven, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven, with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.

Visitation is from 4:30 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a scripture wake service at 5 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m. There will be a time for sharing of memories after the rosary. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Bernice died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Bernice was born November 30, 1904, at New Haven, Iowa, the daughter of Mease and Anna (Kleckner) Gilles. She attended and graduated from St. Mary's Academy at New Haven, and then attended the Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage.

Bernice was united in marriage to Lorenz P. Helfter in 1924, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven. They lived in Ogden, Utah, for four years. They then moved back to New Haven, where she resided for the remainder of her life.

Bernice worked at Pohle's Drug Store in Osage, and at the Helfter and Carroll Grocery Store in New Haven. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and St. Peter's Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lorenz P. Helfter; a stillborn son, Edward Helfter; a son, Larry Helfter; a grandson, Kenneth Helfter; a great-granddaughter; and a great-great-grandson.

Bernice is survived by four children, Donald (Marilyn) Helfter of New Haven, Joan (Jim) Yarwood of Rockford, Illinois, Marilyn (Herb) Johanns of New Haven, Robert (Miranda) Helfter of Oak Island, North Carolina; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
