John Theodore Kozak, 91, of Conrad, Iowa, and formerly of Riceville, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2006 at Oak View Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Left to cherish his memory are three daughters, six sons, 28 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

The Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, was in charge of the arrangements.

John Theodore Kozak, 91, of Conrad, IA formerly of Riceville, passed away Friday December 1, 2006 at Oak View Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM on Friday December 8, 2006 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

John Theodore Kozak was born June 22, 1915 in Osage, Iowa, son of Theodore and Katherine (Duda) Kozak. John attended country schools and began working as a farmhand in the Chicago, IL and Riceville, IA areas. He eventually farmed near Riceville, IA.

On March 22, 1943, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Gunsallus at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They renewed their vows at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa. John and Betty enjoyed 57 years of marriage. To this union ten children were born. John enjoyed his family and farming. His hobbies were fishing and playing cards. John enjoyed his life and it might be said that his greatest achievement was raising his family and his ability to make friends easily. Wherever he went in life at work and play and even in his final month in the care facility he continued to display a joy of living and wit that endeared him to family and friends alike. In the last month he summarized his life “I had a lot of fun”.

Left to cherish his memory are daughters: M. Ann Aulwes-Allison and husband, Bob of Ottumwa, Lura Hockens and her husband, Dan Sr. of McIntire, Ellen Novak and husband Wes of Conrad; sons: Richard and wife, Lynne of Riceville, Ron and wife, Marcia of Mason City, Roger of Gulfport, IL, Robert and wife, Cheryl of Ostrava, Czech Republic, Russell and wife, Marianne of New London, Rex and wife, Bonnie of Marshalltown; 28 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife, Betty; son, Randy; grandchildren Jeannie Kay Hockens and Melanie Kozak, his parents Theodore and Katherine; his sisters Mary and Theodora; brothers Boris, John, and Roy; step-brothers Mike and Steve, half-sisters Marjorie Kozak and Helen Huisman; half-brother Walter and adopted brother John.
