Obituary

In our last issue we mentioned the death of Mr. B. C. Whitaker at his home at Erie North Dakota.

His son John returned from there with the remains on Saturday afternoon,and the funeral services were held at the M.E.church, of which denomination he had been a member for many years.

Mr. Benjamin C. Whitaker was born January 2, 1812, in Deposit, Delaware county, New York. In 1835 he was married to Miss Sophronia Foreman.

They removed to Orange county, New York, thence to Pennsylvania, where they lived several years. From there they went to Michigan and afterward came to Iowa making Osage their home in 1854. August 31 of that year he entered the quarter section of land now constituting the first ward of this city.

To Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker were born nine children, six of whom are yet living. Mrs. Mary Felt of Mason City, John F. Daniel B., Henry, Mrs. Nettie Owen and Joseph. All of them live in this community and were present at the services except Henry, who resides in California. Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker lived in Osage from 1854 till January, 1879, when Mrs. Whitaker died. Some time after this and in the same year Mr. Whitaker married Abigal Nutting and moved to North Dakota where he died April 14, 1894, after a sickness of only two days, from kidney trouble. Rev. E. J. Lockwood conducted the services in the presence of many old friends and neighbors.
