Death of Peter S. Markham
The death of Peter S. Markham at the home of his son F. M. Markham, in this city on Saturday, April 14, 1894, takes from among us a man of many years; a life that goes back almost to the beginning of our history as a people.
He was born in Orleans county New York, October 18, 1811, and passed his fourscore years, being 82 years, 5 months and 27 days old at the time of his death.
When twenty-two years of age he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Hicks, and to them were born four boys, three of whom are now living. In 1846 they moved to Walworth county, Wisconsin, where he lived for three years. During that time he ironed two grist mills, his trade being that of a blacksmith which he followed for forty-five years.
In 1849 they moved to Dane county and located seventeen miles east of Madison, the capitol of that state.
After living together nearly a half a century, his wife died in 1880 and since that time he lived with his youngest son, F.M. Markham with whom he came to this place two years ago.
The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at three o'clock by Rev. A.K. Beem, of the Universalist church.
