SUTCLIFFE
Mary Ann Halroyd was born at Wynesgate, Yorkshire, England, June 16, 1810. She was a
daughter of Rev. Mark and Sarah Halroyd. Her father was for twenty-six years the pastor of the
Baptist church in England.
She was the eldest of six children, three of whom are Baptist ministers. Miss Halroyd was baptized in England by her father. At the age of twenty-four she came with her father to America.In 1842 she was married to Joseph Sutcliffe and with him went to live at Port Dover, Canada. Only one son was born to them. Dr. Marcus Sutcliffe, husband of Mrs. Sutcliffe of our town. Her husband died Jan. 2,1882 and two weeks later her only son (Dr. Sutcliffe) died. In the same year she came to Iowa where she lived in Charles City,four years at Plymouth and three years in Osage.
She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.Celia Sutcliffe, February 26, 1899.
For many years she has received tender care from Mrs. Sutcliffe and the grandchildren of the home. She was a life long lover of Milton and the old English authors.
She loved music and for many years sang in the choir. Hers was a long and useful life, almost ninety years. At last she fell asleep trusting the Lord she had loved and served so long.
The writer spoke from Heb. 12, 27: " That the things which cannot be shaken may remain."
The remains were taken to Mason City for burial.
