Death Of Robert Connell

Resident of Mitchell for Over Thirty Years
Passed Away Last Wednesday

A pioneer citizen of Mitchell county, Robert Connell of Mitchell died Wednesday of last week in Canada, whither he had gone to look after business interests. Mr. Connell was for a long time engaged in the business of manufacturing monuments and was well known, at least in name, to most of the people in the county.

Obituary.

Robert Connell was born in Renton, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, May 24, 1839. He came to Montreal, Canada in 1854, and there resided for five years when he moved to Troy, N.Y.

While yet a resident of Scotland he had learnd the art of engraving upon cooper, but the trade not being suited to his taste, he turned his attention to the marble business, in which he bacame very proficient and which formed his life work.

He returned to Scotland and there remained for one year. Upon coming again to the United States about the time of the opening of the Civil war, he enlisted in the 21st New York Engineers and served during the war, or to be exact, four years and thirty days. He was married June 14, 1872 to Miss Jessie Mauleer, who died June 30, 1892. His second marriage was to Miss Julia Willard and occured July 1, 1893.

To this latter union three children were born, all of whom were present at the funeral.
Mr. Connell led a very busy life and was fair and honorable in all his dealings. He had been in frail health for about sixteen years preceding his death. Funeral services were held from the late home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. O. M. Van Swearingen of the Congregational church of Mitchell, officiating. The services were in charge of the Osage Masonic lodge of which order Mr. Connell had been a member since early manhood.

The body was buried in the Osage cemetery.
