Smith
Mrs Ann Cassidy Smith was born in Quatill, Monehan county, Ireland, December 1829, and at the age of 18 years, emigrated to this county. On June 12, 1848, she was united in marriage to Thomas G. Smith of Toronto, Canada. To this union was born 12 children, two sons and 10 daughters, seven of whom died in infancy. One son and four daughters are still living as follows: W. J. Smith, Osage, Iowa; Mrs. Albert Klein of Norris, Minnesota; Mrs. Agnes Gifford, LeRoy, Minnesota; Mrs Belle Greeley, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Mrs Arthur Rice of this city, at whose home she quietly passed away Thursday morning, January 24th at eleven o'clock. She also leaves 18 grandchildren and 13 great grand children. All of her children were at her bed side during her last illness and death, except Mrs. Klein, who did not arrive until after her death.
She was a loving and affectionate mother, always devoting her life to the welfare of her chidren. Those who knew her best loved her most. She came with her family to Iowa about 33 years ago and for the past 33 years has made her home in Osage.
On April 8, 1888, she gave her life to her Saviour and united with the Baptist church at Osage, Iowa, of which she has since been a faithful member, and attended church as long as she was able to go. Her pastor was always a welcome visitor, and after his last visit and prayer at her death bed she said she was ready to go to her rest after so much sickness and pain.
Mrs. Smith has been failing all winter and on January 22, she was taken seriously ill, a general breaking down from old age; all that could be done by loving hands was done but to no avail and her tired spirit took its flight to be with her Saviour and reap her well earned reward."Dearest mother, thou has left us,
We thy loss so deeply feel.
God has taken and bereft us.
Yet He'll all our sorrows heal."The funeral service was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Rice, on Saturday morning conducted by her pastor Rev. L. T. Foreman and D. I. Coon of Washington, whom she had requested some years ago to perform this service.
