Death of Mrs. Frank Nixon
Mrs Josephine Bishop Nixon was born in the state on New York, January 10, 1848, and died in Osage, Iowa, February 26, 1899. In 1856 when she was but eight years of age her father came to Iowa and settled in Mitchell county.
In her early girlhood she saw many of the trials, hardships and also pleasures of pioneer life. She was quick, active and alert as a student, made good progress in the public schools, and also attended the Cedar Valley Seminary. She was also a successful teacher for a time.
On the first of January, 1867, she was united in marriage to Frank M. Nixon. The whole of her married life was spent in Osage or vicinity. She was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom survive her. Of necessity her domestic cares and duties took the greater part of her time, and she did not mingle much in society.
Of late years she did not add largley to the circle of friends that she made in the earlier years, because her first thought was of home and home duties. She met her part in life faithfully, honestly, conscientiously. She was a dutiful daughter, a loving sister, a true wife, a self sacrificing mother. She was ready, willing, anxious to do all that she could for others. She never spared herself. She lived a life of unselfish devotion to her family.
Her death was a shock not only to her family, but to the community. On Monday she was apparently in her ususal health. On Tuesday she was not well, but it was thought that in a day or two she would be all right. On Saturday her condition was alarming and there was little hope of her recovery. On Sabbath evening she passed away. She was a member of the Methodist church. She was a member of the W.C.T.U. and an active worker in that organization.
The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon under the direction of Rev. W. W. Gist and Rev. L. M. Woolverton. The W.C.T.U. attended in a body and there was a large attendance of friends and neighbors. A brother from North Dakota was present, but a brother from Montana was not able to get here. The children were all persent execepting the son in Alaska.
