A fatal accident occurred in the German settlement in Newburg township on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hardwig had gone to one of their fields, leaving a young child in care of an older brother; about 10 a.m., the boy went to the cellar for some article of food, leaving the child in the doorway; on his return he found it badly wounded, and it died a few minutes afterward.

Upon a post mortem examination, by Dr. Bundy, it proved to be a gun-shot wound, supposed to have been done by some hunter, although no person was seen nor report heard.

~Mitchell Co. Press, Osage, Thurs., August 28, 1879; pg 2 (St. Ansgar column)

Note: The 1880 mortality schedule, names the child as Fred Hartwig, age 1 year
