Another Old Settler Dead
It becomes our painful duty this week to record the death of another of the early pioneers of Mitchell county, and thus the list of those who early made homes in this county is being decimated, and soon the last living link that connects us with the early history of this section will be severed, and their memory will be all that is left to tell of the privations and discouragements met by those who first came here to lay the foundations upon which our present prosperity has been reared.

Last Friday Nathaniel W. Moss died at his residence near Brownville. Mr. Moss was born in Quebec, Canada, the 16th day of August, 1815.

In 1834 he moved to New York, and in 1854 he came to Iowa, settling in 1856 in Mitchell county at the place where he died, and where he lived during the past 22 years.

Mr. Moss was a prominent Mason, loved and honored by the fraternity of which he was a conspicuous member. No man in Iowa advanced further in the work and labor of the order, and he was truly a Mason in all things pertaining to that brotherhood, honoring and honored by the craft.

Mr. Moss was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, a steadfast and true friend, a man loved and respected by all who knew him. He was prominently connected with the early history of this county, and always took an active and influential part in all matters of public interest, political, social and moral. Generous to a fault, the kind hand of sympathy and material support was always extended to those in want or distress.

His funeral took place on Sunday, and his remains were deposited in the Osage cemetery, followed by a large concourse of his fellow-citizens. The Knights Templar, Osage Commandery, and Osage Lodge all joined in paying the last sad rites to their departed friend and brother.
