Jason Walter Schmidt, 43, passed away August 27, 2021. A Celebration of Life service will be held September 17, 2021 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. Visitation will be held September 16, 2021, at the First Lutheran Church Parish Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Private family burial will be in Woodland Hills Cemetery in Mankato, MN.

Jason was born December 16, 1977 in Mason City, Iowa to Robert and Bette (Ulrich) Schmidt. Growing up in Forest City, Jason could have been found on the football field, on stage with the drama department, on tour as part of the Three Men and a Mike acapella group, or perhaps in trouble in the principal's office.

Jason started his family early, and as a young father, he spent time between Mason City and Ames before settling down with his family in St. Ansgar, Iowa in 2001. The Saint Ansgar community would eventually come to be his home. Jason had many different titles as he navigated early adulthood, such as 'Builder' as he worked all sorts of construction and cabinetry jobs, 'Student' as he completed his Associate's Degree at NIACC, and 'goofy uncle Jay' as he did magic tricks for all his nieces and nephews.

While in Saint Ansgar, Jason found his career path in Law Enforcement, where he worked primarily as a 911 Dispatcher. He spent most of his Law Enforcement career serving the Worth County Sheriff's Office in Northwood, Iowa. He enjoyed being able to help people in their times of need and be the calm voice behind the radio.

In 2014, Jason met Melissa Jo, and everyone who knew the two of them together knows you'd be hard-pressed to find a pair that worked better together or loved each other more. From that meeting, they were married in 2015, and a blended family blossomed. With that family support, Jason found his callings in other areas, such as leading church mission trips and being a foster parent.

If there was one thing Jason loved during his time on Earth, it was being able to be a father to his 4 wonderful children, and the memories they have created together will last forever. You would often find Jason in the bleachers, or on the fence of all the events his children were a part of. If you weren't sure who he was, he made sure he was the loudest cheerleader there. He enjoyed seeing his kids doing what they loved and supported them any way he could. Jason was very proud to share with others about his children's many accomplishments in life.

Survivors include Melissa Schmidt of St. Ansgar; his children, Jonathan Schmidt of Des Moines, Bryan Schmidt of Cedar Falls, Megan Schmidt of St. Ansgar and Madilynn Schmidt of St. Ansgar; siblings: Lisa (Richard) Simmons of Minneapolis, MN, Alan (Cheri) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids, IA. Dave (Beth) Schmidt of Jackson, MN, Michael(Jenie) Schmidt of Des Moines, IA, Kari Schmidt of Minneapolis, MN, Corey (Kelli) Schmidt of Des Moines, IA. Andrew (Brittney) Schmidt of Iowa City, IA, and Darin (Leean) Schmidt of Algona, IA. Jason was preceded in death by his parents Bette and Robert Schmidt; grandparents Raymond and Irma Ulrich, and grandparents Roy and Margaret Schmidt; and his twin siblings, Richard and Ryan Schmidt.
