Wake services for Edward Peter Salz will be held at Visitation Parish in Stacyville, Iowa, on Sunday, October 11th, 2020 from 4pm – 6pm with the rosary from 3:30pm – 4pm. Funeral services will also be held at Visitation Parish on Monday, October 12th, 2020 at 11am. Memorials can be made in his name to St. Ansgar Rescue Squad, Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, and Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage.

Edward Peter Salz, was born April 23rd, 1932 in Lostant, Illinois, as the second son to Dora (Vogel) and Peter Salz. At the age of two, Ed's family moved to Iowa where they purchased the Little Cedar farm. Later the family moved to the "home farm" east of Stacyville. Ed grew up on the farm working side-by-side with his Dad. After completing the eighth grade, he continued to farm. He served in the Army from 1952 during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. Ed met Ellen Margaret Koenigs, lovingly known as Marge, at the Terp Ballroom in Austin, Minnesota.

Ed took over the farm from his dad, Peter in 1964 and started dairy and crop farming. Ed was his own mechanic, farm manager, milker, and salesman. He excelled in dairy, livestock and crop farming. In the early 1980's he ventured into crop seed sales for RBA, Stauffer and Northup King. In 1986 the decision was made to discontinue dairy farming. In 2000, Ed and Marge retired to their home in St. Ansgar. Some of Ed's proudest accomplishments was the purchase of his first tractor, the International Harvester Farmall 560, and dedicating his life to sobriety in 1989.

Ed married Marge Koenigs on April 8th, 1958. They were blessed to have seven children: Carmen (John) Kittleson, Sharon (Bruce) Bartels, Barb Salz, Doug (Joy) Salz, Judy Salz (Mike Coonrod), Den (Laurie) Salz, and Debra (Kent) Steenblock.

In his early career, Ed was a cat skinner with Wood & Falk and was proud of the fact that he helped build Highway 20 across Iowa. He later purchased the family farm and took on farming responsibilities. Ed was a member of the American Legion and also a Stacyville Community Nursing Home Board Member. He loved Twins baseball and his '57 Chevy named Sweet, Smooth and Sassy. Community and family members admired Ed's card playing skills (500 and Euchre). His family believes many bills were paid by his card winnings.

Ed and Marge started their worldly travels in retirement. Their adventures took them to Costa Rice, Alaska, multiple destinations on the East and West coast – rounding out their last trip together in Branson, Missouri in 2015.

Ed was a proud grandpa to Jacob (Molly) Kittleson, Isaac (Sarah) Kittleson, Caitlin (Jordan) Frederick, Mackenzie (Jordan) Kress, Trey Bartels, Riley Salz, Paige (Jake) Pierce, William Coonrod, Kristen Coonrod, Ben Salz, Brandon (Mikayla) Salz, Colin Salz, Carter Salz, Megan Salz, Delaney Steenblock and recent great-grandpa to Mabel Frederick and Caroline Kittleson. They appreciated his farming stories and one-line wit. All grandkids loved spending time with their grandpa and he enjoyed watching all the sporting events in which his grandkids participated. Ed was an avid St. Ansgar Saints fan.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Marge in 2015, parents, infant brother Ambrose, brothers Leo and Father Marvin, sister Monica Halbach, brothers-in-law Don Hemann, Jerry Halbach and Harry Hemann.
