Margaret Smolik

June 10, 1942 – September 26, 2020

Margaret Smolik was born June 10, 1942, in Vocin, Croatia, which was then a part of Yugoslavia. Her family lived on a farm with her grandparents. Due to WWII, they lost their farm and the family lived as refugees in Austria for seven years.

In January of 1952 they sailed to America and came to Iowa. Margaret grew up in Des Moines and attended St. Joseph's Academy and Drake University, where she met her husband Gary Keith Smolik. They married in 1965. She became an English teacher and taught in Milwaukee, in Osage, and at NIACC for many years.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church for over 50 years, the Orchard American Legion Auxiliary, Alpha Writers, the local writers' group, and was active in many parish and community events.

Margaret in survived by Katherine Ann Smolik of Tucson, Arizona, Frank Ray Smolik of Des Moines, Iowa, Mark Edward Smolik of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Michael David Smolik (Gloria) of Fountain, Colorado and her sister Theresa (Tony) Pragovich). Surviving grandchildren include Megan Jacqueline Smolik (Frank) and Adam and Aaron Smolik (Michael and Gloria). She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Theresa Grguric, a sister Rose (Joe) Grenko, and her husband, Gary Keith Smolik in 2011.
