Myron George Myers
January 25, 1930 - April 3, 2020
Myron Myers, age 90, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on April 3, 2020 at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center in Riceville, Iowa.
Myron George Myers was born on January 25, 1930 to Fred Myron Myers and Hilda Frieda Wilhelmina Lubbert at their home on a blustery minus 30-degree morning. Dr. Thomas Walker delivered the new baby recording the birth in his spiral notebook to be recorded officially later. But somehow the birth was never registered so no official record existed of the baby’s birth.
Myron, the oldest of five siblings, grew to adulthood on a number of farms in Afton Township south of Riceville, Iowa. He attended Afton Township School No. 10 with his education completed through the eighth grade. Attending high school was not an option as he was needed to help his parents farm, but his lack of a high school diploma did not hinder him from becoming a very successful farmer and respected member of the Riceville community. He was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church holding a number of positions within the church. His faith was an important part of who he was as a person. Each day started and ended with prayer. Oftentimes he could be found resting with his hands folded while deep in thought.
Myron came from generations of farmers. He cared for his livestock, and he loved to till the soil, smelling the freshly turned earth in the spring, and watching the freshly harvested grain pouring into the wagons in the fall. And God blessed his labors. On September 5, 1953, Myron married a farmer’s daughter, Mary Joan Tweeten, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, Iowa. In 1959 the home farm was purchased two miles south of Riceville on the Howard-Mitchell County line where Myron and Mary continued to farm until his death. Myron also was employed by a number of Riceville businesses through the years – Lenz Implement, the Riceville Sale Barn, and as a salesman for Pioneer Seed Corn.
He enjoyed traveling the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada, the Panama Canal, Europe, England and the Scandinavian countries. In 1988 a home was purchased in Mesa, Arizona where winters were spent enjoying friends and family, playing cards and shuffleboard, and making visits to the area casinos. For many summers a week in June was spent camping and fishing at Lac de Milles Lake in Ontario, Canada.
Myron is survived by his wife, Mary, and four children: Cindy Myers McDaniel of Phoenix, Arizona; Dan Myers of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania; Randy Myers of Cary, North Carolina; and Russell Myers of Elma, Iowa; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Luverne Myers in Lincoln, Nebraska; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Hilda (Lubbert) Myers; brothers, Eugene and Ivan Myers; sister, Jeanette Myers Mesner, and grandson, Garrett McDaniel.
A private family graveside service will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery south of Riceville, Iowa. Memorials can be sent to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 105 W. 6th Street, Riceville IA 50466.
