Lawrence “Larry” Squier, 97, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City surrounded by loving family.

A funeral service for Larry Squier will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd with Pastor Mechille Boldt officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church or family's choice.

Lawrence “Larry” Squier, 97, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City surrounded by loving family.

Lawrence Edward “Larry” Squier was born November 24, 1922, on a farm east of Orchard, Iowa, in Mitchell County to Lawrence J. and Hazel (Frank) Squier. He attended rural schools in Floyd and Mitchell counties and graduated from Osage High School in 1941. He played football and wrestled while in High School.

He was married to Virgene Horn May 30, 1942, in Osage. They were the parents of six children: Lawrence J., Sandra, Tom, Judy, Kenny, and Terry. Virgene died in April 1976.

After graduating from High School, Larry worked as a hired man on farms until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in December of 1942. He went to Purdue University to study to become an electrician while in the Navy. He also attended special schools in South Chicago to become an aviation electrician’s mate. He served on several air craft carriers in the South Pacific and was discharged in December 1945.

He worked as a maintenance electrician at the Oliver Corporation from December 1945 until October 1947. He then worked as a truck driver and electrician for a time. After becoming a full time truck driver, he became a member of the Teamster Union in 1950. He was elected to the office of trustee in 1962.

After being a trustee for three years, he was elected to Vice President and then President of Local 828. He worked full time for Local 828 from 1966 to 1974. He was an officer in the local Teamster Union for 21 years in all. He returned to driving full time for Taken Brothers Freight Line in 1974 after being on leave of absence for approximately 8 years to work for the Union. He retired from driving and from President of Local 828 January 1, 1983.

Larry loved competition sports and played baseball and fast pitch softball until he was 46 years old. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also bowled for many years on leagues as well as on teams for the VFW and Moose Lodge. He was an active member of the VFW and went through all the chairs and was a Past Commander. He was a Life member of the VFW, Life member of the American Legion, Member of the Moose, Pheasants Forever, North American Fishing Club, and was a charter member of Teamster Local 828.

Larry is survived by his companion of 31 years, Dolores Roberts; sons: Lawrence J. “Butch” (Georgia) of Osage, Tom (Mary) of Gilroy, California, Kenny (Mary) of Charles City, and Terry (fiancé Sue) of Ionia; daughters: Sandra (Ron) Bromley of Waterloo and Judy (Pat) Mahoney of Dillingham, Alaska; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; along with many nieces, nephews, and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virgene in 1976; granddaughter, Jennifer Mahoney; sisters: Lillian Adams and Phyllis Peterson; brothers: Dean, Keith, and William; half-brother, Marvin Arp; and half-sister, Patricia Arp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church or family’s choice.
