Jim L. Marr, age 72, of Riceville, Iowa, died Friday, July 5, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born December 1, 1946 in Riceville to Leslie and Maureece (McDaniel) Marr. He served in the US Army from 1966-1968 and was stationed in Vietnam for 51 weeks during that time.

On December 28, 1968, he was united in marriage to Susan Margaret Irvin at Immaculate Conception in Riceville, and together they had four children: Janet, Mike, Joanne, and Kenny.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, a member of the American Legion in Riceville (Roy Gue Post 0244), and a member of the rural fire board. Jim was the strong silent type, and a true gentleman who never forgot his manners. He liked Diet Mountain Dew, chocolate chip cookies, and dinner was always at noon sharp.

He enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and poker, fishing, golfing, and good old country music. Jim and Susan were known to cut a rug dancing two-step, polka, and waltzes. They spent many wonderful years together and traveled around the states including Hawaii, Alaska, Texas, California, and Florida. Family and farming were the two most important things in Jim’s life.

He was very proud of his grandchildren and loved going to their events to support them. Jim was also very proud of his cow herd, Allis-Chalmers tractors, and he liked his kitties on the farm.

He is survived by his wife Sue Marr of Riceville, IA, children Janet (Gene Jirak) Pridgen and her children Andrew and Matthew Pridgen of Riceville, Mike (Sherry) Marr and their children Abby and Mitchel Marr of Riceville, Joanne (Mark) Ries and their children Hayden, Connley, and Brynleigh Ries of Elma, IA, and Kenny (Holly) Marr and their children Caleb, Isaac, and Paizley Marr of Riceville, brothers Jerry (Susan) Marr of Spring Valley, MN, Emil (Rita) Marr of New Hampton, IA, brothers-in-law John Irvin of Brooklyn Park, MN, Mike (Nancy) Irvin of Dubuque, IA, Bill (Jean) Irvin of Decorah, IA, Jim Irvin of Riceville, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Bill and Dolores Irvin, and a son-in-law David Pridgen.
