“Euphemia Brown was born on March 14, 1836, at Portstewart, Londonderry, Ireland, of Scotch parents. She was married to Thomas McCook in 1852 and came to the United States in the same year. They lived in Pennsylvania until 1856, but in August of that year they came to Iowa and lived on a farm which they pre-empted near Riceville the remainder of her days, moving into a home, yet on the same farm, in the village of Riceville in 1902. In early youth she united with the Scotch Presbyterian church, and on coming to Philadelphia she and her husband united with a Presbyterian church of that city by letter. There was no church in Riceville for some years after they came here, but a Congregational church having been established, she united with it on confession of her faith, Oct 3, 1869, and has been a member of that body ever since. Thirteen children were born to this family, of whom eight are still living; one daughter and seven sons. Five children died in infancy. There were many hardships and disappointments in the early days for the pioneers and much hard work also. There were three log houses in Riceville when the family came here; a store, a hotel, and one dwelling house with another small frame shanty.”
On the last leaf of this wife and mother’s well-worn Bible was pinned this sentiment which clearly expresses her own anticipation concerning the end of her earthly life and the real meaning of that end which we are glad to believe is no longer anticipation but enjoyment.
