Margaret Jean Lois Mundt Kleinwort, age 95, died Friday, April 5, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Center, where she lived for a short time. Per Margaret’s wishes, her body was donated to Mayo Clinic for educational purposes.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 13, at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar at 11:00 am, with visitation at 9:00 am at the Parish Center.
Margaret was born on July 4, 1923, in Toeterville, Iowa, to Herman (“H. D.”) and Bertha (Benson) Mundt, joining siblings Herman, Jr., 16, Loraine, 13, and Edna, 8.
She was baptized on September 6, 1923, (Grandma Benson’s birthday) in St. Peter Lutheran Church by Rev. Johannes Lehmann and confirmed there on Palm Sunday, 1937, by Rev. C. Bosholm.
Margaret went to Union #4, the one-room school in Toeterville, then graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1939. She attended Iowa State College, now Iowa State University, graduating in 1943, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics Education. During college years, Margaret especially enjoyed activities of the Lutheran Student Association. She taught Vocational Homemaking in Sumner, Iowa, for four years before her marriage.
Margaret was married to Robert F. Kleinwort in St. Peter Lutheran Church September 6, 1947. They lived in St. Ansgar where they raised four children, Edward, Joan, James, and Steven. All graduated from their parents’ alma mater, St. Ansgar High School.
The Kleinworts belonged to First Lutheran Church. Margaret taught Sunday School for many years, and was active in Ladies Aid and Deborah Circle.
Margaret also belonged to I.C. Study Club, sang with St. Ansgar Sweet Adelines, was secretary for the Nissen Library Board, and belonged to a bridge club. She was a personal shopper at the Good Samaritan Center. She and Bob were “regulars” at American Legion / Auxiliary meetings. For several election cycles Margaret enjoyed being St. Ansgar’s Republican Precinct Chairperson. She received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for helping with the St. Ansgar Elementary School after school program.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, sisters, and their spouses Herman (Aileen) Mundt, Loraine (Clifford) Peterson, and Edna (Wallace) Ogg, her in-laws Irma (Otto) Tesch, Gladys K. Bowles, and Shirley (Oliver) Fossey, niece Janet Ector and nephew Richard Fossey.
Margaret is survived by her four children, Edward (Joanne) Kleinwort of St. Ansgar, Joan Haack of Ankeny, James (Mary) Kleinwort of St. Ansgar and Steven (Amy) Kleinwort of Madrid. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren – Kayla (Todd) Farrell, Isabelle and Tyler; Sheri (Adam) Muller, Natalie and Gabrielle; Katherine (Nick) Hickman; Ellie (Matt) DiPietro; Charles Kleinwort; Darin (Kimberly) Haack, Emily and Genevieve; Janelle (Scott) Hook, Noah and Austin, David Haack; Lisa (Cory) Johnson, Hailey and Tristan; Julie Kleinwort; Seth (Brooke) Kleinwort; Sarah (Grant) Thompson; and Zachary Kleinwort. Several nieces and nephews survive.
