Mrs. Almira Cooper Hobkirk was born at Augusta, Oneida Co., N.Y., Sept. 10, 1825, and died at Osage, Iowa, January 18, 1894. In 1845 she accompanied her father's family to the wilds of Wisconsin and become familiar with the experiences of pioneer life. On December 7, 1848, she was united in marriage to Joseph Hobkirk and their home for twenty-one years was at Utica, Wisconsin. In 1869, the family came to Iowa and settled in Mitchell County. This has been their home ever since. Two years ago she and her husband removed to town to spend the evening of life and to escape the burdens of the farm which were becoming too heavy. She lived a quiet, retired life and did not make a large circle of acquaintances. Her health was comparatively good for one of her age and to all appearances she had many years to live. God has kindly veiled the future from us and well it is for us, that we do not see coming events. Six weeks ago without the least warning she was struck with paralysis and rendered almost entirely helpless. From the first there was no hope of her recovery. Loving hearts and willing hands administered to her wants as far as possible. Her sufferings were intense at times, but near the close she dropped into a quiet sleep and passed away.
Mrs. Hobkirk was reared under the influences of the Methodist church and while she was in Wisconsin she was an active worker in that church. Since coming to this county, she lived for the most part far from church services and never united with any church. She never lost her hope in Christ and he was her support as she passed through the valley. She was a kind neighbor. Her husband and three children survive her: Robert S., Wallace J., and Mrs. Anna Duncan.
The funeral services were held on Sabbath afternoon under the direction of Rev. W.W. Gist. many friends and neighbors were present to show their sympathy.
