J. J. Sloan, at one time a business man of Cresco and later at Riceville, and well known in this county, died at his home in St. Paul on Dec. 6th, of heart disease, and was brought to Riceville for interment. The funeral services were held there on Dec. 8th, Rev. Father O’Brien officiating. Mr. Sloan was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., in 1836, and settled with his parents in Wisconsin in 1846. About 1861, he and his wife settled in McGregor. In 1875, he came to Cresco and engaged in business, and in 1881 engaged in business in Riceville, and served as postmaster there under the Cleveland administrations.

Death of J. J. Sloan.
John S. Sloan died at his home in St. Paul, Dec. 6, 1906, of heart failure.
He was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1836, and moved with hia{sic} parents to Wisconsin in 1846, settling on a farm on which the city of Watertown now stands. Here Mr. Sloan spent his boyhood days. In 1861 he married Miss Sarah Connors, and they soon after moved to McGregor and engaged in the mercantile business. He was appointed postmaster at Beulah, Iowa, where he served one year. In 1875 he moved to Cresco re-engaging in business at that point.
During the year of 1881, himself and his estimable wife came to Riceville and went into the grocery business. He was assistant postmaster under A. F. Tyrrell and was later appointed postmaster under the Cleveland administration and held the office eight years.
Mr. Sloan made an excellent record as a citizen along business and social lines and will long be remembered as a kind neighbor and friend; as an honest, dependable man. He was a loyal, earnest Catholic, faithful to the obligations of church and society and met death with the peace and resignation of one whose faith was abiding and who had the assurance of perfect trust. Besides his beloved wife, he leaves two brothers and a sister and a host of friends.
The funeral services were held in St. Paul, and the interment was made in this city on Saturday last. The remains were met at the train by sympathizing friends and the solemn burial services conducted by Rev. Father O’Brien of this city.
