Gene Squier
October 18, 2018
Gene A. Squier, age 77, of rural Riceville, died Thursday, October 18, 2018, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center following a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Julie Schubert officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Gene was born October 1, 1941, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Paul R. and Esther E. (Nicholson) Squier. He graduated from Osage High School in 1960. Gene married Jo Ann (Sheldon) Counsell on March 5, 1977, in Osage. Jo Ann passed away November 5, 2008.
Gene was a lifetime farmer, a talented welder, an avid conversationalist and a fantastic baker, with a specialty of cookies and pancakes. Even though he retired from farming his own land, he didn’t stray too far and recently worked at Johnson Chemical/Helena and provided wisdom and baked goods. Gene was a generous man and loved fishing, even if his fishing adventures only involved baiting hooks and removing fish for his kids.
Baseball was his favorite sport and pitching his favorite position, but watching his kids and grandkids play baseball and their other sports won his heart. Gene also spent many years as a 4-H leader as well as a supporter of his kids and grandkids 4-H projects.
Gene is survived by his children, Merry (Jim) Spiers, Donald (Shelly) Counsell, Deanna Counsell and Mark Muth, Heather (Pete) Rysavy; grandchildren, Derek and Cole Counsell, Merrideth Spiers, Logan and Grayson Rysavy; sister, Ann Squier; brother-in-law, Allyn (Darlene) Sheldon; sister-in-law, Sharon Sheldon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jo Ann; daughter, Denise Counsell; brothers, Glen and Don Squier; sisters-in-law, Janet Squier and Sharon Shaw; step-mother, Norma Squier; brothers-in-law, Gary Sheldon and Walter “Bub” Sheldon; and father and mother-in-law, Walter and Alzina Sheldon.
