Edward J. (Ed) Hatten, age 93, of Stacyville, Iowa, died peacefully at his home on June 11, 2018. Pending arrangements, private inurnment services will be held at a later date.
Ed was born on March 9, 1925, in Britt, Iowa, to parents Edward Paul and Clara (Schiltz) Hatten. The family later moved to Stacyville, where Ed grew up working in the family hardware store and at the Hatten Funeral Home, where his dad was a mortician.
After graduation from Visitation High School, Ed worked at Hormel until he joined the Army in 1943. He trained as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, culminating in one of his proudest achievements when he received his silver wings at graduation in March, 1945. Ed particularly enjoyed the aerobatics portion of the training. After being commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Ed soon left the military with an honorable discharge.
Upon returning to Stacyville, Ed married Kathleen (Kay) Scheer at Visitation Church in Stacyville. The couple resided in Stacyville and raised their 9 children. They later divorced. Ed continued to fly as a private pilot and took his children for flights around the area. There was nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with his children, whether at a movie, the zoo, the park, or driving a camper to Pike’s Peak.
Ed pursued various endeavors throughout his working years, foremost of which was the purchase of the Stacyville Lumber Company where he worked until he later sold the business. Ed served as a councilman for the city of Stacyville for many years, active in community activities such as Brat Days. As a council member, Ed was instrumental in the development of the town's first library and the nursing home.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. When called upon by a former Army buddy for assistance managing the Mon-Ray window factory in Osage, Iowa, Ed agreed to help and worked there for several years. Among other ventures, Ed built condos in Colorado, had an interest in the Burnsville Bowl, and assisted at the chicken processing plant in Stacyville.
He enjoyed problem solving and lending a helping hand to others in their business ventures, and with his vast knowledge and experience he was called upon frequently by family and others for advice, never completely retiring.
Ed is survived by Sharon Theobald, partner; children Robert (Kim) Hatten of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Ann Barton of Stacyville; Dick (Kathy) Hatten of Osage; Jean (Randy) Christofferson of Mira Loma, California; Lisa (Rusty) Hatten-Lowe of Decatur, Georgia; and David Hatten of Stacyville. He is also survived by his brother Don Hatten of California, 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife Kathleen, sons Glen and John, daughter Mary, brother Cletus and sister Ramona.
