In 1982, he started his lifelong career as an agent with Farm Bureau Insurance serving the Floyd County area for 34 years until his retirement on January 1, 2017. Lyle loved his clients and enjoyed serving every one of them.

On May 7, 1983, at the age of 35, Lyle was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cindy Mitchell, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Hampton, Iowa, and to this union three sons were born: Noah, Jacob, and Isaac. The couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary ten days before he went to heaven.

Lyle was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, and enjoyed pulling pranks every day but especially April Fool's Day.
