St. Ansgar, Iowa - Marion Genevieve Bless, 92, of St. Ansgar died, November 2, 2017 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Funeral service will be on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville, Iowa. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.
Marion was born at home on June 4, 1925, in Worth County, Iowa, to O. H. and Ida (Johnson) Thompson. She was baptized by Pastor Ylvisaker at Deer Creek Lutheran Church and later confirmed her faith there. Marion graduated from Northwood High School and attended Iowa State Teacher College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
In 1952, Marion married Howard Bless in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Helen and her brother-in-law Darold. They were blessed with three children: Lynne, Larry and Larae, and spent many happy years on the farm outside of St. Ansgar. During the seven years preceding her marriage Marion taught in country schools and then was a full-time homemaker and farm wife.
Marion was very active in her church and community, teaching Sunday school, attending Circle, Bible studies, “Do-Days”, and always willing to help out at any and all church events. She was a 4-H Leader and Committee member for 17 years and was also very involved in the local Garden Club.
Marion and Howard lived on the home farm until the fall of 1991 when they moved to St. Ansgar where they enjoyed fishing, playing cards and being members of the Sons of Norway. Marion spent time cross-stitching tablecloths for her family and was the Grand Marshal in the Oatmeal Days Parade.
Marion was preceded in death by her mother and father, her mother and father-in-law, husband, Howard, and son, Larry.
Marion is survived by her daughters, Lynne (Don) Rustvold and Larae (Richard) Boatman; daughter-in-law Julie Bless; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Betty Thompson and Doreen (Carl) Finnesgaard; and a host of family and friends.
Blessed be the memory of Marion.
