Died October 31, 2017

Denise J. Counsell, age 47, of Manly, Iowa, and formerly of Riceville, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at her home in Manly from a brief illness.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Denise is survived by her step-father Gene Squier of Riceville; siblings, Merry (Jim) Spiers of Grant City, Missouri, Donald (Shelly) Counsell of Orchard, Deanna (Mark Muth) Counsell of Delano, Minnesota and Heather (Pete) Rysavy of St. Ansgar; nieces and nephews, Derek and Cole Counsell, Merrideth Spiers, Logan and Grayson Rysavy.

November 6, 1969 - October 31, 2017

Riceville. Iowa - Denise Counsell, age 47, of Manly, Iowa, and formerly of Riceville, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at her home, from a brief illness.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday November 25, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Julie Schubert officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery. There will be a luncheon and time to greet the family in the church hall immediately following the inurnment.

Denise was born November 6, 1969, in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Maurice “Skip” and Jo Ann (Sheldon) Counsell. She graduated from Riceville High School in 1988 and Luther College in 1992, with a BA in Biology. Following graduation from Luther, Denise continued her education at Midwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Medical Science Degree in 1995, and spent the next several years working as a physician's assistant in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As Denise's health declined and she could no longer work full-time, she spent numerous hours volunteering with several community organizations. She also took her role of “Aunt” very seriously and could always be found lending a hand at cake decorating for birthdays or washing and grooming sheep for the fair.

She also put several miles on her car, making trips to Missouri, to help with costuming for several musical productions. Denise was the family holiday pie maker, an avid Minnesota Twins fan, and very involved in local politics, as well as the adopted mother of three special felines, Ezmerelda, Morris and Pepper.

Denise is survived by her stepfather, Gene Squier of Riceville; sister, Merry (Jim) Spiers and niece, Merrideth of Grant City, Missouri; brother, Donald (Shelly) Counsell and nephews, Derek and Cole of Orchard; sister, Deanna (Mark Muth) Counsell of Delano, Minnesota; and sister, Heather (Pete) Rysavy and nephews, Logan and Grayson of St. Ansgar.

She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
