Joseph A. Freund, age 93, of Osage, Iowa, died Monday, September 4, 2017, at Faith Home in Osage. Cremation has taken place.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday October 7, 2017, at the Columbus Club in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920 and Osage American Legion Post 278. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2017, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 5:00 p.m.
Joe was born February 16, 1924, at Meyer, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Ginsterblum) Freund. He graduated from eighth grade at Meyer Independent School. Joe served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On June 19, 1947, Joe married Kathleen Gerhartz at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. He worked for Osage Municipal Utilities and retired from Fox River Mills in 1986. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Osage V.F.W., Osage American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Iowa Firemen’s Association, and was a past member of the Osage Volunteer Fire Department. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family.
Joe is survived by his children, Connie (Gary) Springer of Clive, Galen (Lavonne) Freund of Osage, Brian (Crystal) Freund of Land O Lakes, Florida; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathleen in May 2017; three brothers, Stephen, Lawrence and Dr. Oswald J. Freund; and two sisters, Margaret Hanson and Catherine Brandel.
