Sam A. Holcomb, 92, of Osage, Iowa died Friday August 18, 2017 at the home of his son in Arnolds Park, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday August 24, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with Pastor Julie Schubert officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Osage Fire Department or the Osage First United Methodist Church.

Sam was born August 10, 1925 to Ollie and Blanche (Jones) Holcomb in Milford, Iowa. He was raised in Lake City, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1943. Following graduation Sam served in the U.S. Navy V-5 pilot training program. Upon his return from the military he attended the University of Iowa graduating with a degree in Commerce in May of 1948.

While in Iowa City, he met and married Rachel Gould, celebrating 69 years of marriage. They moved to Osage in 1948, began raising a family and working as partners at The Daylight Store. They purchased and later expanded the business to include The Annex before retiring in 1988.

Sam was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served on numerous civic boards and committees including the Osage City Council and Osage Municipal Utilities Board. He was a member of Rotary for over 60 years and was a director of the Farmers National Bank/First Citizens National Bank for 23 years.

Sam and Rachel wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 23 years. His most favorite activity was any time spent with family. He also enjoyed camping, golfing, coffee with the guys, working on the computer, and was an avid walker for over 35 years. Traveling out west to the Black Hills and Yellowstone was a favorite vacation. Sam loved to visit and within minutes of meeting him you had a new friend.

Sam is survived by his children Larry of Okoboji, Iowa, Kathy (Dwight) Jones of Rochester, Minnesota, Steve of Arnolds Park, Iowa, and Ron (Lee) of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren Matt Jones, Hannah Jones, Eric Holcomb, Natalie (Holcomb) Anderson, Aly Kudron and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rachel in 2016; siblings, Joan Burnham and Mary Scholer, and one grandchild, John Kudron.
