Ward Harris, age 85, of Osage, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 3, 2017. He passed away at his home in Osage after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Julie Schubert and Pastor Paul Schaefer officiating.
Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Ward was born March 9, 1932, in Defiance, Iowa, the son of Ward G. and Alta Louise (Mayer) Harris. He attended Harlan High School. Ward served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
On June 15, 1955, he married Carmen Smith in Dow City, Iowa. They moved to Osage in April of 1961 when Ward was hired as the Gas Superintendent of Osage Municipal Utilities. In 1973, they purchased the Staff Motel that they owned and operated until 1979. They then purchased Art’s Shoes which they operated until their retirement until 1999.
Ward was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, and also attended the Plymouth Bible Baptist Church. He was also a member of Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Ward was a colorful, funny, generous man and a good friend to many. He was best known for his quick wit, for being a jack-of-all-trades and for patrolling the town on his motorcycle and in his pickup. Ward loved his family with his whole heart and his life was built around spending time with them.
Ward is survived by his daughter, Kim (Jim) Larson of Osage and their children, Nicholas (Abby) Larson and their son Grant, and Todd (Trista) Larson; his son, Jim (Deb) Harris of West Palm Beach, Florida, and their children, Tish (Ben) Laufersweiler and their daughter Sophie, Joshua (Kristie) Harris, and Jamie Harris; his daughter, Lynne Wright of Osage and her children, Robbie Wright, Nikki (Dana) Heinen and their daughters Morgan and Ava, Jamie (Anna) DeKruif and their children Cameron and Zoé, Shannon (John) Beyer and children Joey and Courtney, Dwayne (Betsy) Wright and sons Skyler and Tanner, Tyler Wright, Amanda (Jamie) Cowell and their daughter Zoey; Hollie Toppin of Osage and her daughter Karmen Harris; sister, Judy (Mike) Kiepke of Phoenix, Arizona; and special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carmen Harris in 2002; his son, Jon Harris in 2007; two sisters, Bonnie Hoffman and Betty Harris; and infant brother, Jamie Harris.
