Knut Gullickson

Knut Gullickson who suffered a slight stroke Monday evening December 18th passed away at his home in the southeast part of the village Monday, Christmas Day at 2 o'clock. For a week he was unable to make his wants known, and tho the stroke was only slight it left him in a very critical condition and was the beginning of the end which was so soon to follow.

It was a sad Christmas message but to him it was a welcome one. He has been very feeble for some time and has looked for the end, but in spite of feeble bodily condition, considering his advanced age, his intellect was quite keen. By his death the last veteran of the Civil War is removed from our village.

Knut Gullickson Skirvaggen was born in Norway December 4th, 1828. His parents were Marie Gullickson and Gullick Anderson. At the age of about 19 years he came to America, but we do not know where he first settled. In the year 1853 he was living on his farm south of St. Ansgar and on the west side of the river.

He sold this place and purchased one about two miles south of Mona a couple years later. The farm near Mona was deeded to his first wife when Mr. Gullickson went to Wisconsin and purchased a farm. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted and served one year, when he was discharged and came back to this vicinity. Later he purchased the farm on Poor Creek between Mona and Otranto where he lived until six years ago when he came to Lyle.

He leaves two sons in North Dakota and two daughters in California, besides his widow, here, to mourn his death.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon and interment was made in the old cemetery two miles south of Mona where his mother was buried. Rev. Forde of Glenville conducted the funeral services -- Lyle Tribune
