Obituary for Dorothy Wallace
Dorothy (Gay) Wallace, age 95 of Riceville, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at the Riceville Rest Home.
Dorothy was born May 8, 1921 on a farm near McIntire, Iowa to Roy and Tessie (Turnmire) Gay. She received her elementary education in country schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1938. In a normal training course she taught in rural schools including Mossville and Afton #3, around Riceville for 10 years. She received her college education from Mason City Junior College, UNI, and Upper Iowa University. Then she taught in town, 1st grade for 26 years, retiring in 1986.
She loved all of her students as her own and wanted them all to succeed even as they were adults.In 1940 she eloped from Mossville school to marry Leo Wallace at the Baptist Parsonage in Osage. They settled in the Riceville area and had 3 sons. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Riceville.
She is survived by three sons: Karman and wife Mavis, Garland, Texas; Curtis and wife Judy of Riceville, and Gerald and wife Sandy of Estherville.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
Preceding her in death was her husband Leo of 56 years in 1996, her parents and two sisters as well as extended family.
