Died September 9, 2016

Rita J. Smith, age 97, of Osage, died Friday, September 9, 2016, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Rita donated her body to The University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Pastor Alan Schulz officiating.

Rita was born February 21, 1919, in New Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Margurita (Schroeder) Koran. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1937. Rita was united in marriage to Paul B. Smith at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City, Iowa, on September 16, 1939. She worked at Risto in Mason City and as a cook at Deer Creek Elementary School in Bailey, Colorado.

Rita was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she was involved with the Rachel Circle. She was also a member of Alpha Writers and Mitchell County Historical Society. She enjoyed sewing, writing about the humorous side of her life with Paul, and weed pulling.

Respecting the wishes of Rita, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests you do a random act of kindness for someone.
