Obituary for Russell Bensend
Russell C. Bensend, 87, of Riceville passed away August 26, 2016 at 9th. Street Chautauqua in Charles City, Iowa.
Russell was born on a farm one mile west of Riceville, to Cecil and Nina (Foster) Bensend, on May 26, 1929. Russ graduated from Riceville High School.
He married Janet Ketelsen on April 20, 1952 at the Little Cedar Methodist Church. They moved to the Foster farm that was homesteaded in 1854 by his great grandfather, in November of 1952. To this union four children were born Karolyn, Victoria, Pamela, and Scott.
Russell served his country in the Army from 1952-1954, returning to farm for sixty years. He served on the Little Cedar Creamery Board, was a Jenkins Township trustee, and served as a trustee and board member of the Riceville Methodist Church, drove senior bus for N.E. Iowa in the Cresco and Protivin area.
Russ loved farming, tractors and horses. He and daughters Vicky and Pam went on many trail rides and he helped them with their 4H horse projects.
Russell is survived by his wife Janet of Charles City, daughters Karolyn (Rod) Roose of AllisonIA, Vicky (Doug) Eschweiler of Waverly, Iowa, Pam (Don)Pretasky of Riceville, Iowa, Scott (Tina) Bensend of Waterloo, Iowa, and two step daughters Amber (Matt) Ciesielski of Independence, Iowa, and Courtney Roose, Independence, Iowa. Also surviving are grandchildren James (Kristie) Pretasky, Amber (Chris)Pretasky Stamy, Jennifer (Billy) Eschweiler Rover, Matt Eschweiler, Garrett, Elizabeth and Samantha Bensend and great grandchildren Peyton and Taylor Rover and Edynn and Scarlet Stamy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bob, Dale and Marvin and his sister Virginia and their spouses.
