Services held for Velma Barnes, 89

Velma P. Barnes, 89, former teacher of Mclntire, died Saturday, January 15, 2000, in the Kirksville Manor Care Nursing Home in Kirksville, Missouri.

She was born December 7, 1910, in Mercer County, Missouri, to the late Jesse David and Ophia Helton Putman. She spent her childhood in Mercer County and graduated from high school before attending Kirksville State Teachers College, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in high school education.

On Jan. 7, 1931, she married Leo E. Barnes in Hillsboro. He died Feb. 23, 1986.

Mrs. Barnes and her husband lived on a farm northeast of Kirksville and she taught school in Iowa until her retirement in 1970.

Survivors include five sons, Leo E. Barnes Jr. and his wife, Millie, of Grand Meadow, Minn., Rex O. Barnes and his wife, Joyce, of Quincy, 111., Joe O. Barnes Sr. and his wife, Judy, of Mendon, Ray I. Barnes Sr. and his wife, Marlene, of Columbus, Neb., and Fay O. Barnes and his wife, Colleen, of Urbana, Iowa; one daughter, Rea Fuller and her husband, John, of Altoona, Iowa; one sister, Vida Griffith and her husband, J.L., of Novelty; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four sisters, Vera Hollowell, Veta Wilcox, Vergie Callen and Vesta Hilko.

Services were conducted Wednesday in the Hudson-Rimer Park View Chapel in Kirksville with burial in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.
