Sister Mary Gerald May Taken By Death
Funeral services were held for a native of the Stacyville area, Sister Mary Gerald May, 87, who died November 20, 1980 in Dubuque. The mass was celebrated at Mount St. Francis in Dubuque by the Rev. Alois B. May, a nephew, and Msgr. Arthur A. Halbach, both of Dubuque.
Julia May was born August 25, 1893, in rural Meyer, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Anna Marie Huemann May. She was one of 11 children in the family. She followed three of her sisters in the convent and served her church 64 years. She taught in Dyersville nine years and in Dubuque four years before taking nurses' training in LeMars.
In 1936 she left for China, remaining 10 years. She spent 37 months in a concentration camp and on her return to her homeland she did nursing service in LeMars and Dubuque. During the 14 years of her retirement she was a resident of Holy Family Hall in Dubuque.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Margaret Bergien of California and many nieces and nephews and cousins, several in the Stacyville-Meyer area.
Among those attending the rites were Al May, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund May of Stacyville and Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Koenigs of Adams.
