William Edward Torney was born either August (or September?) 8, 1855 at Ontario, Canada to Thomas Torney and Margaret McDowell, the first of their seven children. Believe William emigrated to America about 1870 with his parents.

Found in the 1880 - 1895 censuses living at Saratoga, Howard, Iowa:
1880: Thomas Torney age 57, farmer, born in England; Margaret age 44, born in England; William E 24, born in Canada, farm worker; Richard age 19, born in Canada, farm worker; Elizabeth age 18, born in Canada; Anna age 16, born in Canada; James S 14, born at Canada; Isaiah T age 8 born at Iowa.

1885: Thomas Torney 63, Margaret Torney, William Torney 29, Richard Torney 24, Emma Torney 22, Anna Torney 23, Samuel Torney 18, Isaiah Torney 13.

1895: William Torney age 39.

Records found show that William Torney married Emma Gertrude Mason on June 25, 1895 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The couple came soon after marrying to live on farmland at Saratoga, Howard, Iowa.

They had 1 adopted daughter, Nellie Marie.

Found in the 1900 - 1920 censuses at Saratoga, Howard, Iowa:
1900: William E Torney 44, Emma G Torney 33.

1910: William E Torney 54, Emma G Torney 41, James Mecheck 31, Myra Zelia Auringer 20.

1920: Wm E Torney 64, Emma G Torney 52, Nellie Torney 13.

William E Torney died on September 12, 1921 at Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa from injuries received when he was run over by a train. He was buried at the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa.

There is a memorial for him at Find a Grave #91810259.
