Edward James Torney was born July 3, 1864, at Quebec, Canada to Richard T. Torney and Elizabeth Law, the first of their five sons. He was baptized at Quebec.
At the age of 5 (1869), his parents left Canada to emigrate to Lodi, Dane, Wisconsin. About three years later (1872), the family moved west, buying farmland at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa.
Found in the 1880 - 1885 censuses living at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: Richard Torney 45, Elizabeth Torney 42, E. J. Torney 15, Albert R. Torney 13, H. A. Torney 12, Willie H. Torney 9, Geo. E. Torney 5, Jane Torney 70.
1885: Richard Torney 49, Edward J Torney 21, Elizabeth Torney 47, Albert R Torney 18, Hogh A Torney 16, Williams H Torney 14, George A Torney 10.
On May 29, 1888, Edward James Torney became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
He married Luva Anna Whipple on September 1, 1891 at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa.
The couple had 6 children who were all born at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa:
Vera Grace (b December 28, 1893, d March 21, 1988 Iowa City, Iowa);
John Gordon (b October 31, 1895, d May 31, 1986 Hennepin, Minnesota);
Grant Richard (b March 18, 1898, d September 26, 1971);
Herman Merle (b September 7, 1902, d October 1980);
Celia L (b June 29, 1904, d July 28, 1997 Minneapolis, Minnesota) and
Dean Kenneth (b September 5, 1912, d April 2, 1965 Sartell, Stearns, Minnesota).

1920: Working as a carpenter, living on Ash St. Ed J Tomey 54, Luva Tomey 46, Gordon Tomey 24, Grant Tomey 21, Merle Tomey 17, Celia Tomey 15[18], Dean Tomey 7, Stelle Ouranger (Auringer) 25, Eva Ouranger (Auringer) 20, Harry Houghten 17.
1930: Living on Chase St. Edward James Torney age 65, farmer, renting a room, divorced.
1940: Widowed. Edward J. Torney age 75.
Edward J. Torney died April 28, 1950 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
There is a memorial for him at Find a Grave #57269543.
