Carl Ludvig Staff was born October 12, 1861 near Lacrosse, Wisconsin to Hans Larsen Staff and Anna Hovind Andersdatter, the first of their seven children.

Carl was baptized on May 18, 1862 at the Lutheran Church at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. When he was quite young, his parents moved west to settle at Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa.

He was confirmed on April 23, 1876 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Carl never married, nor had children.

Found in the 1870 - 1900 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and working as a farm laborer:
1870: H Staff 40, Ann Staff 30, Carl Staff 10, Herion (should be Haakon) Staff 6, Herion (should be Emma) Staff 3 mos.

1880: Hans Staff 52, Anna Staff 40, Carl Staff 18, Hakon Staff 15, Emma Staff 10, Betsy Staff 9, Johan Staff 6, Laura Staff 4 mos.

1885: Hans Staff 60, Anna Staff 45, Carl Staff 23, Hakon Staff 20, Emma Staff 14, Betsy Staff 13, John Staff 10, Laura Staff 4.

1895: Carl Staff age 34.

1900: Annie Staff 60, Carl L Staff 38, Amma Staff 29, Bertha M Staff 28, Johan W Staff 26, Laura Staff 20.

Found in the 1910 - 1930 censuses at Holway, Taylor, Wisconsin: Working as a farm laborer.
1910: Carl L Staff age 48.

1920: Carl L Staff age 58.

1930: Carl L Staff age 68.

Found in the 1940 census at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa: Carl Staff age 77.

Carl L Staff died on June 7, 1951 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. He was buried at Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. There is a memorial for him at Find A Grave #31821169.
