DAUGHTER, SATURDAYMrs. Julia martin, long-time resident of Osage and Mitchell county, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Earl W. Neil, of St. Paul, Minnesota, last Saturday, September 25, 1943, at 2:00 a.m. She had been in poor health for about a year and during that time has been living at the home of various daughters.
She was the daughter of Sever and Haldes Asle Helgason, and was born on April 19, 1860, in Aal Prestigil Hollingdahl, Norway. She came to America when she was sixteen years old and obtained work first near Carpenter, Iowa, and then at St. Ansgar. Then she came to Osage and worked for the late Loren Brown.
In 1880 she was married to John Martin. They established their home in Osage, where she has since lived. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom survive her. On July 18, 1896, she united with the local Congregational church and has been a faithful and consecrated member through the years, seldom missing a service as long as she was able to attend. She was always ready to do her share in any work of the church.
She was helpful and kind; a good neighbor and a true friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away in February, 1915; also by two children, Helen and Carrie, who died when young.
She is survived by one brother, Henry Severson of Osage, and two sisters, Mrs. August Hultman of Little Cedar, and Gunild, of Leeksengaarde, Norway. Her children who survive her are, Linton H. Irving, of Osage; Pearl J., of St. Paul; Mrs. Earl W. Neil, of St. Paul; Mrs. Willard Foster, of Albert Lea, and Mrs. Virgil Cabell, of Mason City. There are seven grandchildren: Earline and Earl Neil, of St. Paul; Katherine and Charles Easter of Albert Lea; Mrs. Phyllis Reneau of Beloit, Wisconsin, Hubert Cabell of Mason City (now in military service overseas) and Penelope Cabell, of Mason City.
Funeral service was held at the Champion funeral home last Monday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Stiles Lessly, with burial in the Osage cemetery.
