Obituary for Norman Kolberg

Norman Kolberg was born in Webster City, Iowa on September 21, 1932, the son of Hans and Ruby Rinehart Kolberg. Norm graduated from Webster City High in 1950. He then attended Webster City Junior College, where he was a member of the basketball team.

He was a Marine during the Korean conflict from June, 1952 to June, 1955. He was honored to be selected by the Marines to play basketball in Hawaii for them. After being discharged from the Marines, Norm went to Morningside College and graduated in 1958. He accepted his first job teaching and coaching at Dayton High School.

He then met Carol Breyfogle on a blind date to the movie “The Dog of Flanders.” Norm & Carol were married on June 17, 1961 in Holstein, Iowa. He was the principal at Dayton High School and then served as the superintendent at Lytton and Riceville Community School. He enjoyed working for Huffman Production as he went to craft fairs with his wife.

He was a member of the Lions, the Kiwanis, and the American Legion. He was the President of Dollars for Scholars. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, reading and attending his family’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Riceville; his children: Cherise (Jay) Thompson of Ames, Iowa, Alisa (William) Byrnes of Lake Mills, Iowa, Shanda Kolberg of Denver, Colorado, Grif (Noriko) Kolberg of Sugar Land, Texas, and Kelsey Kolberg of San Francisco, California; one brother: Ronnie (Ashley) Kolberg; five grandchildren: Cody & Cade, Brittney (Lars) Christianson, Royce & Mercedes; and one great grandchild: Tavi Christianson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Thomas Angelo Byrnes.
