Helen Grace Young, age 84, of Osage, died Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. Burial will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Helen was born August 30, 1930, on the family farm near Little Cedar, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary (Murphy) Barker. She graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1948. After her graduation, she worked at the Mitchell County Press News. On August 12, 1950, Helen married Charles Young in Bentonville, Arkansas. Following their marriage, they made their lifelong home in Osage, where they raised their four children. In addition to being a homemaker, Helen provided daycare in her home. She also decorated hundreds of elaborate cakes for many special occasions. Helen provided food for men’s night at Sunny Brae Country Club for many years and was known for her homemade chocolate buttermilk brownies and apple bars. She was a member of the Red Hatters, Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary, and TOPS.

Helen enjoyed crocheting, tatting, embroidery, camping, snowmobiling, playing cards, and collecting Coca-Cola items. Helen loved the color purple. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s school, music, and sports activities, and doing things with them.

Helen is survived by her children, Michael (Jennie) Young of Des Moines, Julie (Gary) Oakland of St. Ansgar, and Karla (Jon) Chisholm of Osage; twelve grandchildren, Heidi Young, Hannah (Ryan) Weirick, Emily Young and Benjamin Young, Rudy (Stephanie) Ask, Mandy (Dan) Murphy and Amy (Ryan) McNeal, Jacob (Jessica) Oakland and Sadie Oakland, Andrew (fiancée, Angie) Chisholm, Courtney (JD) Steinberg and Alex Chisholm; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Taylor and Ava Ask, Kye Mackey and Axl Murphy, Adriana Chavarria and Lily Young; brother, Greg Barker of Little Cedar; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Barker and Virginia Ellison, both of Little Cedar; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Young in 2000; her daughter, Carol Ann Ask in 1992; brother, Dean Barker; infant brother, Robert; sister, Marjorie; brother-in-law, Forrest Ellison; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marion and Mildred Young; sister-in-law, Phyllis Barker; special cousin, Zella (Barker) Tidemanson Boggess; nephews, Charlie Ellison and Bob Young; and niece, Judy (Young) Hansen.
