Gene Edwin Peterman was born May 10, 1921 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa to Louis Frank Peterman and Maria Anna Ketelsen, the first of their eleven children.

Found in the 1925 census living at Mitchell, Mitchell, Iowa: Louis Peterman 20, Mary Peterman 22, Gene Peterman 3, Dorathy Peterman 1.

His parents moved the family to Wisconsin when he was quite young.

Found in the 1930, 1940 censuses living at Erin, Washington, Wisconsin on a farm:
1930: Louis F Peterinan 26, Mary A Peterinan 27, Jean E Peterinan 7, Dorothy I Peterinan 6, Maxine Peterinan 3[3 6/12], Betty Peterinan 2[2 6/12].

1940: Louis Peterman 37, Mary Peterman 36, Gene Peterman 18, Maxine Peterman 13, Betty Peterman 11, Ruby Peterman 9, Florence Peterman 8, Colleen Peterman 5, Arlene Peterman 4, Dean Peterman 1.

Gene married Gladys Alma Schrab on May 15, 1948 at Dubuque, Iowa. The couple had 2 daughters.

Gene died May 6, 2007 at Hines, Harney, Oregon. He was buried at the Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.

Oregon News Obituary:

Gene E. Peterman died on May 6, 2007 at home with his daughters.

He was born on May 10, 1921 in Osage, Iowa.
Peterman spent his boyhood in Watertown, Wisc.

He joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 6, 1942, and was assigned to Company "C" of the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion. He spent 33 months in the European theatre of Operations as an M.P., guarding misconductees of the U.S. Army and German war prisoners. Peterman was one of seven survivors at the Normandy Beachhead in World War II. He returned to the United States on the USS Hermitage, which sailed from Marseille, France on November 22, 1945. He was discharged on December 6. 1945.

On May 15, 1948, Peterman married Gladys A Schrab in Dubuque, Iowa. They left for Oregon on their honeymoon and never looked back. Portland was their home, and he went to work for Esco Steel Foundry in 1949. He worked there for 38 years, until he retired. In 2000, Peterman moved to Hines to be with his daughters.

Peterman spent a lot of his time in the outdoors. He loved to travel and was an avid fisherman. At home, he loved to garden and tend to his "pet koi." He loved his beer brats, cheese and polka music. He had a tremendous lust for life and an infectious laugh that will be missed.

Peterman is survived by his daughter, Sharon Linhares and husband Dennis and Karyl Gudge and husband Nick; grandchildren, Lora, Dan, Dyanna and Jason; great-grandchildren, Tia, Riley K., Colton, Justin, Trevor, Zeta, Zoe and Xander; six sisters; and two brothers.

Peterman was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Gladys.
