Shirll Dean Nelson, 88, of Lyle, Minnesota, died Monday, April 20, 2015, at his home.
He was born April 28, 1926, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Alfred and Gertie (Johnson) Nelson. After attending country school, he graduated from Lyle High School in 1943.
Shirll began farming in the early 1950’s, and then owned and operated Nelson’s Roller Drome in Lyle for a few years. On February 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Sissel at the First Congregational Church in Austin, Minnesota. He continued his career as owner of the roller rink in Winthrop, Minnesota, and was part-owner of Nelson Radio & TV.
After living in Winthrop, he returned to Lyle in 1956, where he worked at the Lyle lumber yard, drove school bus, and continued to do TV repair. In 1971, Shirll opened Nelson TV in Lyle before moving the business to St. Ansgar, Iowa, in 1984. A member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle where he served as the custodian for several years, Shirll also worked as caretaker of the Colonial Manor Apartments in Lyle.
His favorite pastimes included golfing, bowling, fishing, and dancing at the Terp Ballroom in Austin, where he met Marilyn, his wife of 62 years. A charter member of the Lyle Lion’s Club for over 50 years, Shirll also served the city of Lyle as a volunteer firefighter for many years.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn Nelson of Lyle, Minnesota; his children: Marshall (Linda) Nelson of Waseca, Minnesota, Bradley (Donna) Nelson of Lyle, Minnesota, and Bonnie (Chris) Duffey of Alameda, California; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Lloyd Nelson of Owatonna, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Gertie Nelson; one brother Morris; his sisters: Maxine and LaVine; and brother-in-law Jerry States.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minnesota, with Pastor Ronald Myers officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Six Mile Grove Cemetery, rural Lyle.
