David E Cutler – February 15, 1833 – May 20, 1922

Doctor D. E. Cutler, another of the pioneer settlers of Winneshiek County passed away last Saturday morning, May 20th, at the home of W. c. Adams where he and Mrs. Cutler have resided the past four years. Dr. Cutler has been confined to the house much of the time during the past two years, and his death was due to the infirmities of old age and a heart weakness which developed about twelve hours preceding his death.

Until compelled to relinquish his practice as a dentist, which he followed for forty-seven years, Dr. Cutler led an active life. Born in La Porte, Indiana on February 15, 1833, he was married in La Porte to Adelia S. Gregg. In the same year they came to Winneshiek County and located at Frankville. A year earlier Dr. Cutler had staked out the first claim to be filed in Mitchell County.

In 1871 the family residence was changed to Osage where they remained until 1913 when they moved to Sioux Falls, residing there until 1918 when they came to Decorah. While residing at Frankville, Dr. Cutler served as postmaster, and he also served as recorder in Mitchell County.

Three children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Cutler; Morris Leonard; Ada ; and Alberthon B. the latter only survived and is engaged in practice in Kalispell, Montana. Beside the son and Mrs. Cutler , Leonard Cutler of Visalia California, and Mrs. Wm. Smith of Decorah a brother and sister, and Mrs. W. C. Adams, granddaughter of the deceased also survive.

Brief services were held on Monday afternoon at the Adams home and the remains were taken to Osage where services and burial were held on Tuesday.

The Masons, of which Dr. Cutler had been a member since 1866, have charge of the service. There were present Dr. A. b. Cutler of Kalispell, Montana; M. A. Burtsch of Sioux Falls, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Seeborn of St. Paul, W. Cutler of Minneapolis, and Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Adams and children of Decorah.

Dr. Cutler was a genial man, kindly to those near to him and cordial in his relations with all who enjoyed his acquaintance.

Decorah Republican, May 25, 1922
