ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Mary Jean (Bredeson) DeMuth, 84, of St. Ansgar, gained her Angel Wings on February 11, 2015, at 10:45 a.m. She passed away peacefully at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, with her husband, Jack, and daughter Deborah at her side.Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 16, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Paul Weeg officiating. Burial will be at the St. Ansgar Cemetery following the service.
Visitation will be Monday morning starting at 9:30.
Mary Jean (Bredeson) DeMuth was born on October 31, 1930, in Emmons, Minnesota, to Hazel (Halvorson) and Christian Olaf Bredeson. She joined siblings Lucille, Harlan and Doris.
As a child, Mary and her family moved throughout Southern Minnesota as her father worked for various farmers while her mother also worked as a housekeeper and cook.
Their final move found them in Mitchell, Iowa. Mary began her high school studies at the Mitchell School in 1946. On Mary's first day at her new school, the principal asked a very handsome Jack DeMuth to “please show Mary Jean where the math room was.” This was the beautiful beginning of a 66 year and 8 month love story that produced three daughters, eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Mary was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took pride in her home, and was a wonderful cook, baker and homemaker. There never will be another succulent beef roast, delicious meatloaf, awesome coleslaw, homemade spaghetti sauce, homemade wheat bread, or cinnamon rolls like Mary made. Again. Her secret ingredient was made with “love”! She was always willing to share these with anyone who stopped by for a cup of coffee!
Over the years, Mary worked in various positions at the St. Ansgar Locker, St. Ansgar State Bank, Dreyer Drug, Gamble Store, St. Ansgar Grain and Feed, Gabe's Hot Fish House, Sportsman's Lounge, Sundown Restaurant and Lounge, and the American Legion. She retired in the mid- to late ’80s.
Faith was an important part of Mary's life. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, an active member of the Martha Circle and worked on many quilting projects with the church ladies. Earlier years, Mary participated in the adult choir at First Lutheran.
Mary enjoyed crocheting, quilting and sewing. Since retiring, Mary crocheted many name doilies for family members and other friends. Her quilts are treasured by her daughters and grandchildren.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 66 years and 8 months, Jack; daughters Deborah (Robert) Slusarczyk of Mason City, Jacquelyn (John) Jorgensen of Ankeny, and Michele (Michael) Stark of Rose Creek, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; sister, Doris (Gerald) Hesch of Austin, Minnesota, and brother, David Bredeson of Rochester, Minnesota. Also surviving are brother-in-law, David (Ruth) Low; sisters-in-law: Diann Orpen, Sharon (Wayne) Nelson, Jeanie (Leroy) Dragert, and Joanie DeMuth-Farque. Special friends, Pam and Joe Beyer, Laurie Nack, Joyce and Alan Thorson, Bev and Larry Wolff, Carol Powers, and Glenda Belz. Numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Waiting to greet Mary are her mother, father, brothers Harlan and Dean, infant sister, Esther, and oldest sister, Lucille. Other family members preceding Mary were her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and several brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law.
The family of Mary would like to thank the staff of the Critical Care Unit and 6 West at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa for their compassion and wonderful care for the thirteen days that Mary was there.
