Marvin “Bud” Frein, age 81, of Minneapolis and formerly of Osage, died Monday, January 26, 2015, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Cremation has taken place.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following services at the K.C. Hall in Osage.
Marvin A. “Bud” Frein was born May 8, 1933, in Osage, Iowa, to Joseph and Julia (Heumann) Frein. He attended Osage Schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1951. He was a member of the high school thespian group and enjoyed acting in plays. Bud had numerous part-time jobs in the Osage area prior to and after his high school graduation.
Bud enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1956. His basic training was at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He served during peacetime in England and with the 803rd Engineer Bn. in New Ulm Germany as an SP4 medic. Bud was honorably discharged in July of 1958. He graduated from the College of St. Thomas with his bachelor’s degree and received his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. Bud taught special education at various junior high schools in Michigan and Minnesota.
After retirement, he greatly enjoyed working as a guide for an overseas touring company. Bud’s interests were wide and varied, including downhill and cross country skiing, golfing, and working out at his nearby health club. He took great pride in caring for the yard and flowers at his Minneapolis home. Very proud happenings in Bud’s life were visiting his brother Jerome’s grave in Italy and attending Mass said by the Pope at the Vatican.
Bud is survived by his sister, Patricia (Donell) Ahrens of Mason City; his brother, Robert “Bob” Frein of Osage; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Frein of Garner and Pat Westendorf of Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and seven brothers.
