ODDEN, Olaus Nels (Nelson) 1855-1915

Olaus Nels Nelson (Odden) was born February 4, 1855 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Lars Nelson Odden and Olea Olsdatter Teigen, the fourth of their nine children and their first son.

From the 1911 Mitchell County Atlas, Section 2, page 18: Olaus N. Odden, born February 4, 1855, bears the distinction of being the first born boy in the Cedar township, growing to manhood in the Meroa area and moving to Dakota as an adult with his brother, Edward Nels Odden.

(Olaus' parents used the surname Nelson until abt 1890 when they switched to Odden).

Found in the 1856 census living on a farm at rural Osage, Mitchell, Iowa: Lars Nelson 36, Olea Nelson 32, Martha Nelson 4, Elsia Nelson 4, Nelse Loss Nelson 1.

Found in the 1860, 1870 census at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1860: Lars Nelson 39, Olea Nelson 36, Martha Nelson 8, Nels olars Nelson 5, Edward Nelson 1, Gabriel Nelson 3 mos.

1870: Lewis Nelson 40, Olea Nelson 40, Olavis Nelson 14, Martha Nelson 18, Edward Nelson 11, Gabriel Nelson 9, Carl Nelson 5, Ole Nelson 3, Han D Nelson 2.

1880: Moved to Roberts, South Dakota.

1882: Married Olivia Bendickson (1860-1945) at South Dakota.

The couple had 1 daughter, Olena Mathilda (1882-1956).

Found in the 1900 - 1905 censuses at Lien, Roberts, South Dakota:
1900: Olas Odden 44, wife, Olivia Odden 39, Tilla O Odden 17 (born August 1882).

1905: O N Odden age 50.

Olaus N Odden died July 15, 1915 at Roberts, South Dakota and was buried at Walla Church Cemetery, New Effington, Roberts, South Dakota.

There is a memorial for him at Find a Grave #93103154 with a photo of gravestone.
